Speeding Stars Baffle Scientists

(Aug. 5) - Stars in a distant galaxy move at stunning speeds — greater than 1 million mph, astronomers have revealed.
These hyperactive stars move at about twice the speed of our sun through the Milky Way, because their host galaxy is very massive, yet strangely compact. The scene, which has theorists baffled, is 11 billion light-years away. It is the first time motions of individual stars have been measured in a galaxy so distant.

While the stars' swiftness is notable, stars in other galaxies have been observed to travel at similarly high speeds. In those situations, it was usually because they were interlopers from outside, or circling close to a black hole.
But in this case, the stars' high velocities help astronomers confirm that the galaxy they belong to really is as massive as earlier data suggested.

Bizarre, indeed

The compact nature of this and similar galaxies in the faraway early universe is puzzling to scientists, who don't yet understand why some young, massive galaxies are about five times smaller than their counterparts today.
"A lot of people were thinking we had overestimated these masses in the past," said Yale University astronomer Pieter van Dokkum, leader of the new study. "But this confirms they are extremely massive for their size. These galaxies are indeed as bizarre as we thought they were."
Scientists used the new velocity measurements, conducted with the Gemini South telescope in Chile and the Hubble Space Telescope, to test the mass of a galaxy identified as 1255-0. The same way that the sun's gravity determines the orbiting speed of the Earth, the galaxy's gravity, and thus its mass, determines the velocities of the stars inside it.
The researchers found that indeed, the galaxy is exceptionally dense.
Given its distance of 11 billion light-years, galaxy 1255-0 is seen as it existed 11 billion years ago, less than 3 billion years after the theoretical Big Bang. Among other galaxies we can
observe from this time period, about 30 to 40 percent are compact like this one. But in the modern, nearby universe, astronomers don't find anything similar.

Something wrong?

Somehow, high-mass galaxies from the young universe grow in size but not in mass – they spread out but maintain their overall heft – to become the high-mass galaxies we see today.
"It's a bit of a puzzle," van Dokkum told SPACE.com. "We think these galaxies must grow through collisions with other galaxies. The weird thing is that these mergers must lead to galaxies that are larger in size but not much more massive. We need a mechanism that grows them in size but not in mass."
So far, such a mechanism is elusive, but astronomers have some ideas. Perhaps these galaxies expand their girth by merging with many small, low-mass galaxies. Or maybe these galaxies eventually become the dense central regions of even larger galaxies.
"It could also still be that we are doing something wrong," van Dokkum said. "But I think at the moment you could say that the ball is somewhat in the court of the theorists. Hopefully they can come up with some kind of explanation that we can test further."

Too Many RIP's

Lately there has been a lot of 'Names' that have died, however the only one I wish to say Rest in Peace to is Frank McCourt. He truly was the last great writer of our generation. (Yes, Stephen King is great, but, he's in a league all his own.)

I was first introduced to Mr. McCourt's work by my jr. high English teacher. She gave me several of his short stories that had been published in various magazines. She knew my sense of humour, my love of culture, & that I was ahead of my time (I'm elitist, get use to it...) I loved them and eventually read Angela's Ashes. Never before had a book exploded with such emotion & humour at the same time. I know there are some of you have read that book...(for those of you who just watched the film - Shame on you! It's ghastly! Pick up a book you lazy sods.)...if you have, be sure to check out the two follow-up's: 'Tis & Teacher Man.

For you idiots who are into these new-age books (HP or Twilight,) now would be a good time to take you head out of you asses and read a real piece of literature.

*Deep Sigh*

At a little after 10 this morning I got the call I've been dreading. If you've read my last few blogs I'm sure you can put 2 & 2 together.

There's a strange calm in my heart.

Warning # II - The Obsession

Periodically I’m sure you will read the name Doug Hutchison. Now, hopefully there are people on here that don’t need slapped hard across the face, however, inevitably, there will be several who do.
The man is genius at what he does, he has more talent than any of you could hope to have, and he’s utterly gorgeous.
I’m not going to waste your time typing out a long, boring blog that I’m sure you wouldn’t even begin to read. All I will say is that he’s an amazing actor. I won’t even insult what little intelligence that you have by giving you a list of his works. I know all I have to say is ‘The Green Mile’ (Percy Wetmore to be exact,) [I see many ‘oooh, that guy” remarks in the future] and many of you will realize right away who I mean. Anyway, he is my sick/twisted obsession (don’t worry - not to the point of even stalking.) (I really hope I scared some people though.) and the only person on the planet worthy of it. [If that frightens you, you should see some of the things Francesca & I say…] I’m going to leave things on that note, a simple warning is all you need. Happy reading…

Savage Update II

My poor Savage is no better, in fact, he's worse. He's not even taking liquids properly anymore. I don't think it will be too much longer until it's all over. I'm trying to come to terms with that, it's hard though. I still just feel so damn guilty for not seeing him much these past two years. No matter how I felt when I was there, he was always around to comfort me. Since he's been sick, I've only seen him once. It was horrible. I just sat there for an hour & cried while I petted him. He knew it was me, every time I tried to stop he would make a noise as if he didn't want me to go. It broke my heart to leave him, but I couldn't bare to see him like that anymore. It kills me still....

Savage Update

Savage isn’t doing well at all. There is something seriously wrong. I called a little bit ago to check up on him (for the 5th time already) and I could hear him crying through the phone. Apparently he only does it when anyone comes near him. That’s a horrible sign.

I’ve been crying for almost an hour and a half.

So far today he’s growled at 2 of my aunts for going near him and tried to bite the crack-whore. Savage has NEVER once even attempted to growl or bite anyone. He would bark at strangers until they were inside [but] after a good sniff he was fine. My uncle is the only one so far he's let near him for any length of time.

My heart is breaking and I can’t go down there.
